tillandsia

Choose Option This product has several variants. The options can be selected on the product page

Epiphytic specialists with fascinating absorbent scales

Tillandsias are bromeliad-like epiphytes from Central and South America. In their natural habitats, they grow on trees, rocks, or cacti – without contact with the soil. Their roots serve almost exclusively for attachment.

Characteristic features – especially in the grey varieties – are the absorbent scales (trichomes). These silvery, shimmering leaf structures regulate the plant's water balance.

  • Absorption of rain, fog and humidity
  • Protection against evaporation
  • Reflection of intense sunlight

The silvery coloration of many species arises precisely from this dense trichome coating. It is not a "coating," but a highly specialized adaptation trait.

Grey & green Tillandsias in the terrarium

Grey Tillandsias (heavily covered with trichomes)

Typical examples:

  • Tillandsia usneoides
  • tillandsia ionantha
  • Tillandsia caput-medusae
  • Tillandsia argentea

Characteristics:

  • prefer very bright locations
  • are adapted to drier conditions
  • They are sensitive to prolonged dampness.

ImportantGrey tillandsias should not be placed directly in the focus of the irrigation system. Prolonged, direct exposure to the spray nozzles can lead to rot.

Lighting, on the other hand, is crucial – the brighter the location (without overheating), the more compact and vital they grow.

Ideally, irrigation should be carried out as follows:

  • manually about once a week
  • with lukewarm, not ice-cold water
  • then allow complete drying
  • Suitable for all types of terrariums if the location is right, even desert terrariums.

Green Tillandsias (less trichome coating)

Examples:

  • Tillandsia brachycaulos abdita
  • tillandsia cyanea
  • Tillandsia butzii
  • Tillandsia melanocrater tricolor

Characteristics:

  • somewhat more moisture-resistant
  • often softer, greener leaves
  • nevertheless not tolerating waterlogging

Even green species must not be permanently located in the direct spray area of the irrigation system.

Basic rule for all Tillandsias:
They must dry completely after each humidification – especially before the night phase.

Tillandsia usneoides – the free-hanging special form

Tillandsia usneoides (Spanish moss) occupies a special position.

We offer various forms:

  • Very fine, thin form from Brazil (somewhat more moisture-resistant)
  • classic standard shape
  • decorative curly variant

All variants should:

  • cultivated hanging freely
  • not the direct focus of the irrigation system
  • be sprayed manually on a regular basis

Our Usneoides plants are usually supplied on a wire hook so they can be hung directly in the terrarium.

Alternatively, sections can be removed and hung freely. Good air circulation is always important so that the plants dry quickly after spraying.

Mounting in the terrarium

Tillandsias are ideal for use in areas unsuitable for other plants:

  • in the upper third of the terrarium
  • near the lighting
  • under the lid area
  • on back or side walls
  • on epiphyte branches

Mounting options:

  • special plant glue
  • Mounting adhesive (use sparingly)
  • wire or nylon thread

Location & Care Overview

  • very bright location
  • good air circulation
  • no permanent spray focus of the irrigation system
  • Complete drying after each wetting
  • Manual spraying once a week
  • Do not use tap water

When properly placed, Tillandsias are extremely long-lasting and easy to care for.

Structure provider in the upper terrarium area

Tillandsias:

  • greening otherwise unused areas
  • create light, airy structures
  • They are suitable for both large and small tropical terrariums.
  • Bromeliads, ferns and climbing plants complement them ideally

They are perfectly positioned, especially in the upper front area, outside the direct spray cone of the irrigation system. Hardly any other plants can be kept alive there permanently.

Individual consulting

The optimal choice of species depends on:

  • illuminance
  • Irrigation interval
  • Air circulation
  • Terrarium size

If you are unsure which tillandsias are suitable for your setup, we would be happy to advise you individually. Please contact us!

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Tillandsias

Why are tillandsias silvery?

The silvery appearance is created by absorbent scales (trichomes) through which water is absorbed and evaporation is regulated.

Can tillandsias be hung directly under a sprinkler nozzle?

No. They should not be in the direct focus of the irrigation system, as constant dampness can lead to rot.

How often should you spray tillandsias?

Usually once a week, manually. It is important to dry completely afterwards.

Do tillandsias need a lot of light?

Yes. Very bright locations promote compact growth and intense coloration.

How can you plant tillandsias in a terrarium?

Attach to branches or backs using mounting adhesive or special plant adhesives.
or glue the side walls in place.
