Climbing plants

The structural basis of every tropical terrarium

Hanging and climbing plants are far more than mere decoration. They form the supporting, structural vegetation layer in planted rainforest and tropical terrariums.

You:

  • Green the back and side walls
  • create vertical levels
  • create hiding places
  • stabilize the microclimate
  • connect the floor, hardscape and upper terrarium areas

They play a central role in maintaining biological balance, especially in bioactive setups.

Climbing plants as nutrient regulators in the bioactive terrarium

In terrariums with animals, nutrients are continuously introduced:

  • Animal droppings
  • dead feeder insects
  • Supplement residues from dusting the feeder animals
  • organic material in moss areas, streams or paludariums

Fast-growing climbing plants absorb these excess nutrients and convert them into plant mass. Regular pruning removes the nutrients bound in the plant material from the terrarium and prevents other, slower-growing species from overgrowing.

Without this "consumer", imbalances can quickly arise:

  • Algae formation
  • Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae)
  • unstable water parameters
  • Over-fertilization of moss areas

Especially in frog terrariums with high humidity and water content, vigorously growing climbing plants are therefore a crucial stabilizing factor for the biological balance.

Terrarium-suitable genera & rarities

Our product range includes specifically controllable, terrarium-tested species – many of them botanical rarities.

Ficus species

  • Oakleaf ficus (Ficus quercifolia or Ficus montana)
  • Colombia ficus (Ficus spec. Colombia or Ficus minima)
  • Panama ficus (Ficus spec. Panama or Ficus punctata)

These grow in a much more controlled manner compared to the classic Ficus pumila and are easier to manage than the forms commonly found in hardware stores or garden centers.

Araceae & tropical climbers

  • Philodendron
  • rhaphidophora
  • Syngonium
  • Peperomia
  • dwarf Monstera
  • Pellionia

Botanical features

  • Solanum species
  • Marcgravia (originally from South and Central American habitats)

Many of these plants originally come from botanical collections or expeditions – but today they are available from sustainable propagation in specialist shops.

The focus is always on species that can be cultivated permanently in tropical or subtropical terrariums.

Proper cultivation in the terrarium

planting

Climbing plants are usually:

  • with their root ball in the soil
  • or used in integrated plant pots within the terrarium landscape

Important:

  • no waterlogging
  • functioning drainage layer
  • sufficient water drainage

Waterlogging also leads to root rot and instability in the system in the long term. Many climbing plants, however, also readily spread their roots into the water sections of, for example, paludariums, where they branch out extensively.

Light & Growth

Many climbing plants thrive in moderate light at the bottom and then grow upwards towards the light.

However, for compact growth and strong leaves, the following still applies:

  • no total darkness
  • uniform basic lighting
  • upper areas with higher light intensity

This results in dense, stable plant structures instead of elongated, unstable shoots.

Added value for poison dart frog and tropical terrariums

Climbing plants:

  • create vertical movement spaces
  • offer retreat options
  • stabilize the humidity
  • promote a stable bioactive balance

In combination with ground cover plants, mosses and epiphytes, a three-dimensional, ecologically functioning habitat is created.

Terrarium plants instead of mass-produced goods

As with all plant segments, our focus is on:

  • Species suitable for terrariums
  • controllable growth
  • botanical features
  • long-lasting cultural capability

Many of the species offered are not available in traditional garden centers or are only available there in unsuitable forms.

Individual consulting

Each terrarium is different in:

  • Size
  • luminous intensity
  • Ventilation
  • Water content, for example in the paludarium
  • Animal stock

If you are unsure which climbing plants are suitable for your setup, we would be happy to advise you individually. Just take a look. Contact up with us!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why are climbing plants so important in a terrarium?

They stabilize the biological balance, absorb excess nutrients, and create structure, microclimates, and hiding places.

Can climbing plants grow too large?

Yes, depending on the species. Therefore, selecting species suitable for terrariums and that can be controlled is crucial.

Do climbing plants need a lot of light?

Many can cope with moderate light, but grow more compact and stable with sufficient lighting.

How can waterlogging be prevented?

Through drainage layer, loose substrate and sufficient water drainage – even with integrated plant containers.
