Measurement & Control

Reliably control temperature, humidity and lighting

A stable terrarium climate doesn't happen by chance. Especially in planted rainforest terrariums, paludariums, or reptile terrariums, it is crucial to reliably monitor and control important environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and lighting duration.

In the Measuring & Control category at Rana Terraria, you'll find technology that allows you to precisely control these parameters. This enables you to adapt the conditions in the terrarium as closely as possible to the natural habitats of your animals and plants.

Key devices include:

  • Thermometer for monitoring the temperature
  • Hygrometer for measuring humidity
  • Thermostats and hygrostats for automatic control of heating, foggers or ventilation
  • Timers and second timers for lighting, irrigation or other technical devices

With the right combination of these devices, a terrarium can be largely automated and operated in a permanently stable manner.

Monitor the temperature in the terrarium

The correct temperature in the terrarium is vital for the survival of many animals. Thermometers and thermostats allow for precise temperature control.

While a thermometer only measures, a thermostat can automatically regulate connected devices such as heating cables or heating mats.

This ensures that the temperature remains stable even if the room temperature or time of day changes.

Measure the humidity in the terrarium

Humidity plays a crucial role, especially in rainforest terrariums. Hygrometers allow for reliable measurement of the humidity within the terrarium.

In combination with hygrostats, a fogger can be automatically controlled.

This allows for the achievement of constant humidity levels, as required by many tropical plants, frogs, or geckos.

Automatically control lighting and technology

Many technical devices in the terrarium can be automated using timers.

Typical applications are:

  • Control lighting
  • Control irrigation systems by time (second timer)
  • Automating fog systems or fans

This allows natural day-night cycles to be simulated and significantly reduces the amount of care required.

Automated terrarium control

Modern terrariums can now be largely automated. With a combination of thermostats, humidistats, and timers or second timers, temperature, humidity, and lighting can be largely controlled independently.

This not only ensures stable living conditions for animals and plants, but also makes everyday life easier – especially with multiple terrariums or larger systems.

FAQ – Measuring & Controlling in the Terrarium

Why should you measure temperature and humidity in the terrarium?

Many terrarium animals are very sensitive to incorrect climate conditions. Thermometers and hygrometers can be used to check whether the temperature and humidity are within the optimal range.

Why is a thermostat needed in a terrarium?

A thermostat automatically controls heating devices. As soon as a set temperature is reached, it switches connected devices on or off, thus ensuring stable temperatures.

Why are timers useful in a terrarium?

Timers can be used to automatically control lighting, irrigation or fans, creating a natural day-night rhythm.

Is it possible to completely automate a terrarium?

Yes, many terrariums can now be largely automated. Thermostats, humidistats, and timers can be used to automatically regulate temperature, humidity, and lighting.

Should an irrigation system be controlled with a hygrostat?

In most cases, it is not advisable to control a misting system via a hygrostat. If the hygrostat measures a humidity level that is too low, the misting system may run continuously, resulting in the terrarium becoming heavily saturated or even flooded.

For irrigation systems, time-controlled operation via a timer is generally the better solution. A hygrostat, on the other hand, is very well suited for foggers or ultrasonic humidifiers that only gently increase humidity.

Why should you use a second timer for irrigation systems?

Many digital timers have a minimum switching interval of one minute. However, this is often too long for terrarium misting systems, as even a few seconds of misting can be sufficient.

Therefore, it is recommended to control a misting system with a timer. This allows for very short misting intervals of just a few seconds, enabling more precise humidity control and preventing the terrarium from becoming excessively wet.
